Apple HomeView Could Shake the Smart Home Race

Apple’s new $299 display tries to make the home screen personal, private, and hard to ignore.

A screen that knows whose face is looking at it sounds useful, and a little invasive. Apple is betting homes will take the trade. On October 13, 2026, it introduced HomeView, a $299 smart display with a 7-inch Liquid Retina screen, a speaker base, and a camera that can recognize up to six people. It can sit on a counter or hang on a wall, with shipping set for November 13.

Shared screen, private faces

HomeView tries to be a household panel and a personal device at once. Apple says it can show different apps and widgets when it recognizes a face, keeping Messages, Calendar, Reminders, FaceTime, and Find My separate for each user. Shared albums and playlists can still be opened for guests. Sensitive content has another lock: a paired iPhone or iPad must be nearby and recently unlocked. The device uses an A18 chip and Apple’s Secure Enclave isolation to handle camera and microphone data separately.

Siri AI is the brain behind the pitch. Apple calls it more conversational, with broad world knowledge and onscreen awareness. With a compatible Apple Intelligence device, it can use personal context and carry conversations across Apple products through iCloud. Siri AI launches in English in several markets, but not the European Union, because Apple says Siri AI is not currently available in iOS there.

More than a TV sidebar

Apple frames HomeView as a home dashboard. It can display up to nine camera feeds, adjust lights and thermostats, lock doors, close blinds, and run automations by touch or voice. With compatible cameras and an eligible iCloud+ plan, it can recognize people, pets, packages, and vehicles, describe HomeKit Secure Video clips, and alert users when it hears smoke or carbon monoxide alarms. It also handles FaceTime with Center Stage, Intercom, voice messaging, Find My, Live Activities, recipe timers, and multiroom audio.

The rest of the Apple Home push

The launch is wider than one display. Apple showed a new Apple TV 4K at $299, shipping November 13, with three far-field microphones, an A19 chip, AV1 decoding, and a remote that can sound off if lost. It can act as a home hub and pair with HomePod mini 2 speakers for a four-speaker surround setup. HomePod mini 2 costs $149, starts shipping October 30, and adds the S10 chip, new colors, voice recognition for up to six people, and Sound Glow, a top light display that reacts to music, album art, or soundscapes.

Home Collection adds cameras, a video doorbell, a smart deadbolt, thermostats, and sensors made with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. Apple says they connect through Apple Home without a separate account or app, with end-to-end encryption keeping data inaccessible to Apple, LG, and Schneider. The accessories begin arriving in December, with more in early 2027.

The price of feeling personal

HomeView is pricier than many smart displays. The New York Post compared it with Amazon’s Echo Show 8 at $179.99 and Google’s Nest Hub at $99.99. Avi Greengart, president of Techsponential, told the newspaper the device was “gorgeous,” smaller than it looks, and deeply tied to Apple’s ecosystem. His caution was blunt: homes already built around Ring or Android may not see a reason to switch. He also suggested Apple’s premium could push rivals upmarket.

CNBC framed the launch under new CEO John Ternus, who replaced Tim Cook in September, and noted Apple’s Wearables, Home, and Accessories segment made $7.88 billion in the June quarter, about 7% of revenue. The home line may be smaller than the iPhone business, but it helps keep customers inside Apple’s device web.

The question is not whether a screen can learn your face. It is whether your home will agree to be known by it.
