Cloudflare Turns 16, and the Internet’s Invisible Friend Is Still Ready to Shake the Web
Sixteen years, forty-six birthday announcements, one global meltdown and a founder who became the story himself. Meet the company that holds up a fifth of the web while almost nobody notices it standing there.
On November 18, 2025, the internet caught a cold. Spotify stalled mid-song. Uber stopped pinging. DoorDash orders froze in place. ChatGPT stared back at millions of users with nothing to say, and League of Legends matches simply evaporated. And in the middle of the chaos sat a plain grey page asking strangers the same tired question over and over: are you human?
That page belongs to Cloudflare. For one embarrassing, illuminating day, people on every continent learned the name of the company that had been holding their internet up all along. This week, that company celebrated its 16th birthday, and the story behind the candles is stranger than any cake.
Cloudflare is not an app you download or a site you bookmark. It is the middleman. Founded in July 2009 by Matthew Prince, Lee Holloway and Michelle Zatlyn, and unveiled on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt on September 27, 2010, the San Francisco company now sits between visitors and roughly a fifth of every website on the planet — 21.3% of all sites, by W3Techs’ January 2026 count — speeding pages up, shrugging off attacks and checking tickets at the door. The idea grew out of Project Honey Pot, the spam-tracking side project Prince and Holloway built years earlier. The side quest became the infrastructure.

The friend who became the story
Every viral company story needs a face, and this one has three, but 2026 made Matthew Prince the one people argue about at dinner tables. The co-founder and CEO announced in May that Cloudflare would cut roughly 1,100 roles, about a fifth of its workforce, and blamed not failure but success: AI tools had made those jobs obsolete, he said, in the same breath as the company reported record quarterly revenue of $639.8 million, up 34% year over year. He added that Cloudflare expects to employ more people by the end of 2027 than at any point in 2026. Supporters called it candor. Critics called it a template for every AI layoff memo to come. Either way, the man who spent sixteen years keeping the web’s plumbing invisible made the whole world stare at the pipes.
Then came the founders’ letter he signed with Zatlyn for this birthday, admitting something stranger still. For the first time in the network’s history, automated traffic surpassed human activity. The party’s guest list is now mostly bots.
Sixteen candles, forty-six gifts
Cloudflare celebrates the way it works: by shipping. Birthday Week 2026 ran from September 28 to October 2 and unpacked 46 announcements, per the company’s own wrap-up of the week. Call it the most productive 16th birthday party on record. Monday went open source with cf, a command-line interface built for developers and AI agents alike, plus EmDash, an open-source CMS pitched as a spiritual successor to WordPress that cages plugins in isolated sandboxes. Tuesday got security-minded, declaring Cloudflare’s intention to become a public certificate authority twelve years after it started handing out free Universal SSL, and setting a 2029 deadline for its post-quantum cryptography migration with an AI helper called CryptoLabe. Wednesday followed the money with a Monetization Gateway that lets sellers charge AI agents through HTTP 402, and Pay Per Use, which pays publishers when verified AI buyers consume their work. Thursday and Friday closed the week with the Basin data platform, the K2 event stream and a bundle of observability upgrades, including Cloudflare Traces.
Why a stranger in any timezone should care
Because Cloudflare’s choices set the weather for everyone’s web. Its free 1.1.1.1 resolver answers queries from Lagos to Lima. Its WARP app and Workers platform hum along inside routines you would never associate with a single company. Its checkboxes decide whether you count as you. When it sneezes — as it did during that November 2025 meltdown, later traced in its own postmortem to a database configuration change that pushed an invalid file to every server on the network — streaming, shopping, gaming and news all catch the cold together. The company rang the NYSE bell in September 2019 at $15 a share under the ticker NET, and by 2025 it was booking $2.168 billion in annual revenue with 5,156 employees, which means its birthday-week experiments in making AI agents pay humans for the work they consume are less a stunt and more a first draft of the next decade’s rules. Even the interns got a slice of cake: one year after pledging to hire 1,111 of them, Cloudflare credited its intern class with real contributions to launches like EmDash and CryptoLabe.
Sixteen years old, one in five websites, and still best known by a checkbox nobody enjoys ticking. Happy birthday, Cloudflare, our most invisible internet friend. Blow out the candles slowly, because the bots are already queued outside, and somebody has to check their tickets.
Quick answers about Cloudflare's sweet sixteen
Why did Cloudflare celebrate its 16th birthday in 2026 when it was founded in 2009?
The company was founded in July 2009, but it launched publicly on September 27, 2010 at TechCrunch Disrupt. Birthday Week counts from that launch, which makes 2026 the sweet sixteen.
What does Cloudflare actually do in plain words?
It stands between visitors and websites as a reverse proxy, caching content, absorbing DDoS attacks and filtering malicious traffic, with extras like the 1.1.1.1 DNS resolver, the WARP app and Workers edge computing.
What were the biggest Birthday Week 2026 announcements?
Forty-six in total. Standouts include the cf agentic CLI, the EmDash CMS, plans to become a public certificate authority, a 2029 post-quantum migration target, the Monetization Gateway and Pay Per Use, and Basin reaching general availability.
Why was Cloudflare trending in late 2025?
A global outage on November 18, 2025 slowed or broke services including Spotify, Uber, ChatGPT and League of Legends. The company's postmortem attributed it to a database configuration change that sent an invalid file across its network.
